Building Link Popularity - Why are links to your website important?

Creating links to your site helps increase your ranking score with Google, which means your site will be easier to find in their search engine.

Not just any link or set of links will do. Links must have value in that they are related to what your site is all about and the links should help the reader find more information. To add links for the sake of adding links is highly scrutinized now by companies such as Google who will pull your site off their search engine if they feel you are trying to push up your site's value without truly providing value. As we mentioned before, Google's job is to provide searchers with the highest quality websites according to the terms a user searches for.

For instance, if you type historic homes for sale, you do not want to pull up websites selling lawn and garden equipment, companies who are just using the terms historic homes to capture your attention. You want to immediately find that which you are seeking. If a lawn and garden website throws hundreds of links on its page talking about everything from used cars to music downloads, just to draw traffic, they will be caught and penalized by Google.

When searching for link partners, seek out those who sell similar products or services as you do. Start with a keyword term or phrase you use and plug it into the search engine. See who comes up and then write them a letter asking them to exchange links with you. Getting listed in directories also helps you build link popularity, with the Yahoo directory being the most popular.

In building link popularity, it may cost time and some money, but if it increases your free organic rankings, it is worth it.
